History of the Tau Psi Chapter |

History of the Tau Psi Chapter One person can make a difference. Sylvia Peng, Alpha Kappa Psi's founding president, was extremely interested in joining a business fraternity, where she could excel in the business world, when she and Heather Allen, a member of the Board of Directors for Alpha Kappa Psi and Chapter advisor, discussed the possibility of starting a new chapter at the University of Houston.
Sylvia Peng then attended the National Convention held in August of 2001 where she met Sarah Reams, Expansion Coordinator for Alpha Kappa Psi. The falling spring semester, Sarah Reams attended the University of Houston passing out informational fliers and speaking to as many business classes as she could about the benefits and reasons to join Alpha Kappa Psi.
Three informational sessions were held on February 5th, 6th, and 7th all of which had a turnout of about 15 students. During these meetings there was much discussion about the recruitment of new members. However the word spread so quickly throughout campus by just word of mouth that there was an outstanding turnout and the colony soon reached and passed its required 40 members. Soon afterwards the officers were then selected and Sylvia Peng became President; Rachael Hay-Bac, VP of Administration; Crystal Bott, VP of Membership; Eric Huang, Treasurer; Ashmin Chrowdhury, Secretary; and Joanna Romero, Historian.
Quick to get the ball rolling, the colony anticipated their first service event would be held on March 16th at Southwest Memorial Hospital where they would accompany the residence there in friendly games and an outdoor barbeque. The following week of March 20th a scavenger hunt was be held around campus, familiarizing each other with their fellow brothers and socializing during a picnic snack on the campus courtyard. On March 27th, mock behavioral interviews took place with Heather Allen, giving each member an opportunity to prepare themselves for future interviews in the business field. The last, but not final, professional event toured the Texas First National Bank and the privilege of having a speaker from an FDIC officer on March 30th.
This chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi is young, vibrant and anticipating years to come of making Alpha Kappa Psi known as prestigious, professional, and becoming role models of proper conduct and values at the University of Houston.
Founding President Address October 5, 1904 saw the creation of an organization, a fraternity, committed to the shared ideals of four students of Commerce, Accounts, and Finance at New York University. The Brooklyn Four, as they were dubbed, championed the establishment of what would become known as Alpha Kappa Psi. It would be a professional business fraternity, and it was the only organization if its kind.
On April 20, 2002, almost a century later, 37 men and women bound by the same ideals, resolved to do what the Brooklyn Four had done, this time at the University of Houston, forming the Tau Psi chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi. This fall, we embark on the challenge of building up a new organization while enjoying the unique opportunity to lay the groundwork for a new installment of an old legacy. Come experience the brotherhood, teamwork, professional development, scholarship, service, and friendship of Alpha Kappa Psi. It will leave an indelible mark on your college days, as it has mine.
Fraternally yours, Sylvia Peng Founding President, Tau Psi Chapter
